so this week has been exciting, i have been stretching my arm every day and i can almost straighten it out all the way, and my rotation is getting better every day.
last monday after i emailed you we had a huge rain storm and every where got flooded over night. we had people who had water up to their chests! luckily no ones houses got washed out and all the members are fine.
tuesday we went our members restaurant and the water was still up to our ankles. so we were basically sweeping water out of their restaurant because it isn't level and the floor is lower in the back of the building so it just fills up. it was really weird, but we got the water out. then we walked a few miles checking on all the members. one member the water was still up to our knees in the late after noon. luckily their house is raised up and nothing got inside but they were very wet from all the rain. then another member had water that was about 5 feet deep running through the first floor of her house because the river overflowed. so that was really close to destroying their house because it is just bamboo and ply wood. really close to them not being here any more! but all in all a fun day. (these comments amaze me!) no one was hurt and we got to walk through a lot of water.
but then nothing much. we went around to as many members as we could and tried to help them realize that no matter what happened in the past they can come back to church and start off the new year in a good way. we ended up with about 18 people at the beginning of sacrament but ended up with 39, so close to our goal of 40. oh well, there is always next week.
its really weird though, i feel like i really haven't been here for very long but i have almost been in the philippines for 5 months! I'm more than a quarter of the way through and i just got here. there is still so much more to come. elder ostler keeps saying "when your a zone leader your gonna have lots of fun" ahhhh not going to happen. i keep saying I'm just going to be a junior companion my whole mission. but i don't see that happening.
new years was crazy! its bigger than Christmas in this country. they all had all their family and had letson, a whole rotissary pig. it was so much fun helping all of them prepare. but here in the philippines on new years eve we have to be in our apartments at 6! so we didn't get to eat and stuff, but we stayed up until 12 and went out side and watched all the ridiculous fireworks. they are super ghetto and you never know if they are done. one that a guy lit off he hung on his fence and ran, it just like started blowing up and fell off. then he went to lite the next one and the first one started blowing up again a few minutes later. it sounded like guns were going off all night long. people were still lighting them off when we got up and went to church. they were so cool but that's why we had to be home at 6 because people lose hands and all kinds of crazy stuff. the whole night we could hear ambulances going down the highway.
sunday we only had sacrament again, then had all of our meetings and did tithing. then went to visit some members but none of them were home, and there were no rides so we walked about 5 miles or so. it was so fun. we had a member with us to who works at the other members restaurant and they fed us after with all the left over meat from the day before. it was so good and tons of food! i was so stuffed! then this morning me and elder ostler started that jumping thing and its going to be a fun 15 weeks. (they are doing exercises to increase their vertical leap)
also i forgot last week but thank you grandma and grandpa coontz and urmston for the wonderful candy and shoes. most of the candy is gone but the shoes aren't going to get much use until I'm healed. but until then they are gonna stay nice and clean, unlike everything else i wear. but i love you and i love all the rest of you too that are reading this even if i don't know you and thank you all for all the support

Week 28 - Dulag 12/25/2011
sweet talking to you guys and cant wait to do it again in may.
i have a few questions. the philipinos in my apartment want to buy the old ipods we have, if we still have any. because the only way they can get one is if they order and its super expensive to buy in pesos. I wanted to know if you can send them and they would pay my in pesos and i could convert it and send it home.
so this week was super fun we spent christmas eve at a members restaurant. we showed up and they were super busy! so i sold fruit out front and elder ostler did dishes so that when they closed it went more smooth and they had more time to just chill. it was really nice.
i conducted my first sacrament meeting on sunday, it was amazing but i need some more practice. I'm really excited to be in the branch presidency. i finally got the letters from the primary and was really excited to read them all. and i hear there are more coming (from the Young Men) cant wait to read them. i love hearing whats going on in every ones lives, since you all get to hear all about mine. I'm trying to send pictures of the sweet scar i have from the surgery, i had 14 stitches, its awesome!
i really don't have a lot to say. we have a typhoon coming through right now, i just hope it doesn't flood too bad out by some of the members. the card reader isn't working still so i might try my companions later.
i love you all so much and chads and scotts voices are both way deeper now, it was really weird. but scott is still a weirdo and chad is just chad! merry christmas to you all and cant wait, one more and ill be home lol even better than fast sundays, christmas'. (I told him that I was going to start counting how many fast Sunday's until he gets home. Since they only happen once a month there are only 17 more until he comes home)
We were able to talk to Zac on Christmas!! It was so amazing to hear his voice. As soon as he answered I started crying and had to hand the phone off! We finally straightened out all the different stories about his accident. I told him that Jim thought Pres. Andaya said he had been hit by a car. We were having a hard time figuring out how we could have been that off. Zac told us that he was telling Sis. Andaya that he was going to tell everyone that he got hit by a car, because it would make a better story! I guess Pres. missed the part that it was just a joke!

Week 27 - Dulag 12/18/2011
well to start off you guys are supposed to be calling me right now, the cell number is ------------------ and if i transfer friday i can send you the new number. so we feel like it would be best for you all to call christmas night, so my monday morning. then ill email you after that because itll be p day. and if the number is busy call back in an hour.
this week has been really long and stressfull as we prepared for our branch christmas party on friday. we were only able to teach like 7 lessons all week, and we have had a typhoon coming through for a few days now. it rains every day no matter what, but typhoons are crazy. i dont sleep much because of the cast, i cant wait untill they take it off friday. even though i could take it off right now, its only the cast material on the bottom wrapped in ace bandage. i keep rewrapping the top because it can move and the ace bandage keeps bunching up and is really uncomfortable.
not a whole lot has happened. we taught some really good lessons about baptismal covenants with some inactive members, and one came to church on sunday. and 3 or 4 of them came to the christmas party, so id say succesfull. dang my spelling was horrible before the mission and now that i only write in english when i email its getting worse. i keep typing and it keeps underlining stuff in red! but im typing with one hand and dont want to fix it.
the christmas party we had was amazing! the games they played are a lot different than America but still fun. i only got to play one and it was chugging a 1 liter of juice the fastest. i won that one! turns out they dont drink to much fluid. they all had a 250ml soda with dinner i had 3. then they couldnt finish the one liter, and then i drank another soda after to finish off what was left.
yesterday we had 24 people at church when we started but ended up with 33, so not to bad. some people had trouble getting to church because of all the floods, we had a lot of people not come to the party for the same reason. one problem is our party attendace was 54 and sacrament only 33 dang! oh well, maybe they will come back some day.
well thats really all for now i love you all talk to you next week

Week 26 - Dulag 12/13/2011
(and finally 6 days later we got the actual story)
so kind of late on the letter sorry i didnt get released from the hospital until about 430 and christmas conf started at 5, so straight there then home to dulag with the whole zone in a jeep! pretty fun.
but to start out the week Monday was great, i have been in such a great mood lately then tuesday district meeting, then we ate and went out to work. around 2:30 we were walking to see a member and as we were walking down the highway....

but to start out the week Monday was great, i have been in such a great mood lately then tuesday district meeting, then we ate and went out to work. around 2:30 we were walking to see a member and as we were walking down the highway....
i slipped on a log on the side of the road then slipped in mud with the other foot i put my arm out to catch myself and it hyper extended and i heard a crack! so not good! we then sat for a minute trying to figure out what to do and a bunch of motor drivers stopped and asked how i was. of course not good. then a members son came running and he walked us back to his house while i held my right arm up with my other hand. his mom kind of cleaned me up and then we walked about a mile back to the apartment so i could change. we couldnt get a hold of president or any of the zone leaders because they were all in one meeting. then we went to tacloban on a bus and as we got close sis Anday called and waited for us at the office. they took us to the hospital for x-rays, yay! then the doctor took forever to show up, just like everything else in this country, and told me i fractured my radius and my radial head is out of place and needs to be straightened out with a pin. then they kind of gave me a cast, its only on the bottom and they wrapped it with ace bandage. then president took me and elder ostler out to dinner and had the office elders drive us home. not much sleep with this cast thing.
then work, kind of, on wedsday and thursday when it wasnt raining. while we waited for president to get approveal from the office in manila for surgery.
then friday morning we got a phone call to be in tacloban at 2. then we went to hospital to stay the night because thats what you do here. surgery was supposed to be in the morning but that didnt happen because then i had the choice of having a screw which i wanted because its just 1 surgery and i get my cast off in 2 weeks instead of 3. so the surgery was at 2 but then the plane was late that was bringing my screw from cebu. so then 4, and didnt actually have surgery until like 6 and didnt wake up from it until 11 that night. turns out the good pain pills are illegal in this country! i had an iv in my hand until i got released monday so i could get "pain medicine" but there was no difference between when i had it and when i didnt. (I'm guessing it was pump her could control when he got meds) i think it was just water! so then when i left i was prescribed ibuprofan for pain medicine! i was like what? serious? but what ever. i would send you the pictures but i havnt gotten my package yet. they got mail first thing in the morning monday so it wasnt there yet. oh well maybe next week. i have like 14 stitches because they dont have the technology for orthoscopic surgery. it kind of scared me, they gave me an iv and no heart monitor. i had an iv for 3 days and only had a heart monitor during the surgery. ive slept like a total of 10 hours this week because the cast, and in the hospital nurses come check on you every 2 hours or so. so not fun! but one funny thing, i think sister andaya might send you, is another elder brushing my teeth its kind of weird but he is really nice. sister andaya fed me because i had no hands for 3 days! she fed me so much! i ate mcdonals, kfc and all kinds of good stuff. it was amazing.
then christmas conference was amazing, got to meet lots of missionaries. one knows bailey danahoe (a friend from Memphis) and another is from bakersfeild (where we are from in CA) they were companions in the mtc. weird! but elder leichman has to go home to have surgery on his wrist, kind of sad but he should be coming back. well thats really all. love you guys dont worry im fine just a little tired.

Week 26 - Memphis
This week requires 2 posts, one from the Memphis point of view, and then next will be Zac's regular letter.
On Tuesday afternoon Dec. 6th Jim and I went to Costco. On the way home my cell phone rang and it was Kamrie. She informed me that the mission president had just called! WHAT! I asked what he wanted and she said he wanted to talk to us, and would call back at 6:00. This was at 3:45! So for agonizing hours I tried to imagine all the different scenarios the mission president would be calling us. Then finally at 6:45 the call came. Jim answered and a few minutes into the call I got a thumbs up! He had fractured his elbow and had a displaced radial head. He was going to need surgery and pins, and would stay in the mission home for about a month. We were told by the mission president that he had been hit by a car!
I finally found the mission presidents email and asked him for more information. Like when would he have surgery, etc. Here is our correspondence.
President Andaya,
I hope this email reaches you. I'm sure you can understand my concern for my son. While I have faith that Heavenly Father will watch out for him. And I know you will make sure he is well taken care of. As a mother thousands of miles away, it is very difficult to not know what is happening. If you could please update us on the situation. Has he had the surgery, did it go ok? Is doing alright? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps you could make an exception and allow him to email us.
Thank you for looking after him.
Amy Coontz
Dear Sister Coontz,
Thank you for sending us e-mail. We were able to coordinate with the doctor who specialized in that kind of surgery. He has a fractured in his right elbow, displaced radial head. The application was of long arm posterior mold. The recommendation of the doctor, plan to open reduction pinning radial head. It takes 3 weeks to 1 month healing process and after that he can move his arm. We will give you an update what happen to his surgery. Elder Coontz is a fine missionary and hard working too.
President Andaya
(How was that for clearing things up)
Can you tell us when Zac will be having surgery?
Amy
He will have his surgery this afternoon at 4pm (10 December 2011). They will put screw as per recommended by Doctor Caboboy. I will update you. Thank you.
Dear Sister Coontz,
Elder Coontz undergone surgery this evening at 6:30pm and his condition is better and already in his room for 2 hours in recovery room. The doctor used screw rather that pin. He is now fine and on Monday he can discharge and attend the Christmas Conference. Sending a picture after the surgery.

Week 25 - Dulag 12/4/2011
that's cool that you guys are having a Christmas party. we are having our branch party on the 16th just in case, but i doubt ill transfer with all the new stuff that is going on, but there is also a good chance because lots of people are going home next week. they have to go home a week early because of Christmas and all of them are zone leaders and district leaders. so lots of spots to fill, don't think i will be any time soon, but may need to take some one elses spot. but i hope not, im really starting to like dulag, but not so much the new work we have to do. we are so busy all the time either finding members or in meetings. we haven't even been able to have studies since Tuesday. its crazy how full our day is.
Sunday was good, it was district conference (a district is a stake full of branches and the stake president is the mission president) so it was amazing we had all kinds of trainings and things. the main speaker guy is a members of the quorum of the 70, yay another one, at least this one didn't have me bear my testimony during the meeting. but he is amazing! during the trainings my companion described the training as "a kick to the balls!" it was harsh but so necessary. the attitude of the members is i will do my calling if i have time, not i will make time to fulfill my calling like it needs to be. we find it hard to fulfill our callings and we are assigned as missionaries to do it, but i know the sacrifice is necessary as well for them as it is for us. he basically told of the district presidency because they are taking on branch presidency callings as well and they can't handle 2 callings that are that big. so they are now released and they are calling more next week. this whole place just needs a good kick to get it going and organized. we have found the biggest problem is nothing is organized. we keep finding more and more people who don't live in our area any more but their records never got transferred, ahhhhh!!! its a pain but we are getting there. i am really wanting to take on the primary, we have no youth because in primary all they do is watch movies like the testaments. so when they are older that stops and they don't want to be there any more. but that is going to change really soon now we have to go and rescue all these 19 & 20 year olds who aren't even ordained to the priesthood yet. but its made some progress we had 37 members travel to tanauan for our district conference which isn't easy. its 30 pesos round trip, but the members were able to make the sacrifice. we are hoping that is going to be the turning point for this branch.
so i forgot to tell you about thanksgiving. my companion didn't come back from his training until 8:30 so no chicken we just ate a big bowl of mashed potatoes and some gravy. awesome! and i walked for an hour and a half during that day trying to find a member and didn't find her until we went back this week. so not too fun.
I'm am really learning to speak tagalog now. we went on splits this week with our district leader and i was with his companion who only speaks tagalog and cebuano so when he taught he had to teach in tagalog in order for them to understand, so then they would speak tagalog too and so then i had to as well or people would get confused. I'm really glad I'm able to figure it out a little now that we have two investigator families from before the new program started who don't speak warry warry, tagalog only. so its helps being able to share a little with them as well. also we have been able to have some really good times walking trying to find members. it was pouring rain one day and we had about a kilometer to walk and a big truck drove by and through a big puddle and splashed water all over us even though we moved our umbrellas toward it. it was just too much. so then we got to be soaked for the day. it is rainy season here so i have an umbrella in my bag at all times, its kind of a pain actually needing one instead of just running to the car. oh i wish!
but we have been sharing what we call damnation lessons with the members. we planned a few for different members for when they receive a desire to follow. we read with them about if they don't your going to receive everlasting damnation. kind of a harsh lesson but it seems to be working for the most part. we just have to do it right otherwise they just kind shrug it off which i don't completely understand. but oh well they will get it some day, hopefully before its too late. also we have a crazy week ahead with hardly any time to work because of all the meetings we have to get in before Christmas conference next week. so the next two weeks are going to be amazing with trainings and fun times in tacloban with all the missionaries in the whole mission. then i got some letters yesterday one was from tayloer sorry i cant remember if its an o or an e and then another was from Bailey D and grandma. thank you grandma, the part about telling them you love them was great that's something we do all the time in the mission i actually said it to our zone leaders the other day in a text and of course we are missionaries and have to do some thing to stay sane here, he texted back, more than just friends?!?!?!? lol i laughed so hard and texted back pwede gihap and that means... hmmm well it doesnt really translate but it kind of means it can be that too. but ya fun times in the mission still immature little kids teaching the word of God to the world amazing how that works! well i love you all and hope you are able to have a great christmas party
and im sad i may never see the robertsons again and i dont know that ill get the present before christmas but ill get it in december so thats ok becsue it doesnt go straight to the office they have to go pick it up and only do that once a week thank i love you all so much and still haven't really found anything cool to send home maybe just birthdays
